How to choose most suitable collar for dog
The first accessory to buy when adopting a dog is without a doubt the leash. The second is a choice, the collar or harness. Decide between the two is not easy, but if in the end we opt for the collar, most traditional and widespread, we can not say off the embarrassment of choice.
Collars there is an almost infinite range, materials, shapes, designs and colors. For orientation should be based on the type. In this way the choice is reduced in fact only three basic models: a webbing, to semistrozzo and choke. Let’s see what are the differences and when to choose one over the other.
There are three types of collar
Collar Band: consists of a band entirely in fabric, nylon or leather that makes complete circle around the dog’s neck. It fastens with a buckle or with a carabiner adjustable, as our belts, and therefore has a certain degree of adaptability to the size of the dog.
Collar to semistrozzo: it is constituted by two parts: one in the chain, nylon, fabric or leather with two rings at the ends, and a second chain part that passes in these two rings and ends with both ends on a third ring to which is hooked the snap of the leash. It ‘said semi choke because it tightens when the dog pulls but only up to a certain point: when the two ends of the first portion of the collar approached completely you can not go any further.
Crimp collar: it is constituted by a single portion, the entire chain, provided with two rings at the ends, one of which flows along the length of the collar while the other serves to hook the carabiner of the leash. In this way it forms a loop that tightens around the dog’s neck when he pulls and expands when it is near the master leaving de-tighten the leash.
How to choose the most appropriate in our case
The walk should be a time peaceful and happy for you and for your dog. The fit should be comfortable and then if he does not choke pull, but simply slow down. Based on this principle can move on to consider the pros and cons of each type of collar and decide which one to buy.
It is also ideal for small dogs or dogs that have never been used to going on a leash. Should therefore always be the first to use the collar with a puppy or an adult just adopted, regardless of size. The fact that it is adjustable within a certain range in length makes it perfect for puppies that grow very quickly, especially in the early months.
The measure must be chosen carefully, however: the collar should not be too tight, but not too large, otherwise the dog could sfilarselo. The ideal size is the one that allows you to fill out at least two fingers between the collar and neck when worn. In puppies checked at least once a week that this is possible, or spread it or change it.
The choice of material depends substantially on the tastes, such as for drawings and color. However, those nylon or fabric are very soft and light, and safeguard of the more hair than leather: are therefore more suitable for everyday use. Best to avoid, however, the collars with too many accessories which unnecessarily or that may become dangerous to you or your dog.
Choke collars and semistrozzo
They have the advantage of convenience: you can easily slip on and perfect fit should not be mad because you adjust itself when worn. Also safeguard more hair than collars to clamp them if you choose to chain proportionate to the size of the dog. You should, however, avoid continuous use because they are heavy and could be dangerous if you agganciassero somewhere while the dog plays or moves.
They are suitable for medium and large size dogs, already accustomed to not pull on the leash and without health problems. Do not go well instead for puppies or dogs for their first experience, or for small dogs or do not have well developed musculature. To be avoided in dogs with injuries or muscle disorders in the neck and those with breathing difficulties, such as in breeds short muzzle.
Their use requires experience and balance to the tenant. If used incorrectly can cause serious damage to the dog or hurt, generating anxiety and fear that would make the space for educational purposes and use of protective collar and leash. The use should therefore be restricted to professional personnel under certain circumstances.
